The Ads Meta Forgets

Outside Europe, Meta's Ad Library shows a competitor's live ads and the day each one started. Nothing about spend, and nothing once an ad stops. We built the competitor history it doesn't keep.

Case study · 2026 · 2 min read

Most agencies keep a swipe file. Someone opens Meta's Ad Library, screenshots what the client's competitors are running and pastes it into a sheet. It's slow, it's always a week behind, and it can't answer the question that matters: which of these ads are actually working?

Where the ad runs decides what you see

The Ad Library looks the same everywhere. What it shows depends on the market.

In the US, Mexico, India and most other markets, it hides the numbers. For ads that aren't political and never reached the EU, Meta shows no amount spent, no impressions and no reach. It shows the creative and the date it started.1

Those ads vanish when they stop. They aren't archived. Once a competitor pauses an ad, it leaves the library, along with any sign it ever ran.1 Meta's Ad Library API doesn't return them either.2

Europe is the exception. The EU's Digital Services Act requires a searchable record of every ad for as long as it runs plus a year, including its targeting and its reach.3 Meta keeps EU and UK ads for a year after they stop, and its API returns them.12 Spend is still hidden, even there.

The volume keeps climbing. Across 6,015 ad accounts, Motion found enterprise advertisers launching 18.8 new creatives a week.4 Nobody keeps up with that by screenshot.

What we built

  • A daily snapshot. Every tracked competitor's live ads, recorded each day by Library ID. Over a few weeks it becomes the history Meta throws away outside Europe.
  • A diff against yesterday. New launches, ads that stopped, and ads that crossed 21, 45 and 90 days live.
  • European reach as a signal. When a competitor runs the same creative in the EU, its reach there shows which concepts the brand is putting money behind, wherever else it runs them.
  • Every ad read and tagged. Videos are transcribed in any language, then tagged by hook, angle, format, offer and call to action.
  • Variants grouped into concepts. A brand running eight versions of one idea says more than one ad that happened to run for a long time.
  • A weekly digest per client. What launched, what's still live, and which angles are rising across the category.

What it can't do

  • It can't see spend. No market shows it for commercial ads. Outside Europe, "working" is an inference from run time and how many variants a brand keeps making.
  • Run time can mislead. An ad that was paused and relaunched looks newer than it is.
  • It stays inside Meta's terms. Automated collection from Meta's site needs Meta's written permission,5 so the system runs on Meta's API and licensed ad data, not a scraper.
